The Cell Models

This picture above show the Hypotonic. It has 15 grams of salt with 100 mL of water (15% Salt Solution) The mass of the cell is 35.5 grams.

This picture above show the Hypertonic. It has 25 grams of salt with 100 mL of water (25% Salt Solution) The mass of the cell is 35.5 grams.

This picture above show the Isotonic. It has 20 grams of salt with 100 mL of water (20% Salt Solution) The mass of the cell is 35.5 grams.

This is how the cells look like in the beakers.

The Final Results

The Data table shows that the Hypotonic and the Hypertonic seems to have an accurate result, but the Isotonic seems to be false. Hypertonic had an increase of 1 gram and Hypotonic had an increase of 12.6 grams. The Isotonic had an increase of 4 grams even though the result was supposed to stay the same. The Hypotonic had the greatest Percent Mass Change, which is 35.39%. The Hypertonic had a small Percent Mass Change, which was 2.81%. All did have all the solute traveled in the cell rather than going out of the cell.
Analyze Question
- We made the Hypotonic correctly because we added 15 grams of salt and 100 mL of water, and the cell had 20 grams of salt and 10 mL water. The mass started from 35.5 grams to 48.1 grams, which is a 12.6 increase to the mass. This shows that most of the water from the beaker came in the cell.
- We made the Hypertonic correctly because we added 25 grams of salt and 100 mL of water, and the Cell had 20 grams of salt and 10 mL of water. The mass started from 35.5 grams to 36.5 grams, which is 1 gram increase, showing that barely of the water went out, but a bit of the water came in.
- The Isotonic was not made correctly because the cell mass was 35.5 grams, but when it was left for a day, the mass of the cell increase from 35.5 grams to 39.5 grams. I think the only explanation for the results could be the cell concentration and the concentration in the beaker. Since we weren't able to fit the 100 mL of water in the bag, we put 10 mL of water and 20 grams of salt. The cell and the Isotonic weren't the same, so it gave us false results.
